Bay of Plenty

The Bay of Plenty is one of New Zealand's biggest tourist destinations where visitors can enjoy a unique unending coastline of sweeping, white sandy beaches with great surf, sheltered bays and inlets safe for swimming.

It provides a marine wonderland for aquatic activities such as ironman and surfing competitions to world record game fishing catches and international yachting stopovers.

The Bay of Plenty is also home to New Zealand's largest export port and commercial centre, based in Tauranga and Mount Maunganui.  More than 40 cruise liners visit this port each year, bringing tourists to explore everything from the laidback caf culture lifestyle of Mount Maunganui to the wonderful sights of Rotorua's thermal wonderland.

Located in the eastern Bay of Plenty, Rotorua is home to New Zealand's spectacular geysers and geothermal activity, drawing visitors from all around the world.  It is also a popular tourist destination for visitors wanting to see and experience Maori history and culture.

Only an hours' scenic drive along the coast from Mount Maunganui, tourists can take a day trip to White Island, New Zealand's only live marine volcano that is fast becoming known for scuba-diving and snorkeling adventures.

Whakatane is a historical, coastal town that is the launching point for boat trips to White Island. Set in a farming and forestry region with Ohope beach nearby, this peaceful Bay of Plenty town is fast becoming a sought after destination for locals and visitors alike.

Further along the coast is Opotiki, gateway between the Bay of Plenty and Eastland, either by the inland route to Gisborne or a road that leads around the East Cape, both popular for touring.
