Bay of Plenty >> Tauranga

Nestled beside the Kaimai-Mamaku mountain range and south of the Coromandel peninsula on the east coast of New Zealand's North Island, Tauranga is a place of beautiful harbours, the country's biggest export port, and a thriving cosmopolitan lifestyle.

Dining in Tauranga

The Strand in Tauranga is a hub of activity with a good selection of bars, cafes and restaurants to choose from.  Located on the edge of Tauranga's harbour, The Strand offers a diverse range of cuisine from distinctly New Zealand-style flavours through to those with an Asian or Pacific influence.

Tauranga's Parks

Tauranga's beautiful parks and gardens should not be missed!  McLaren Falls Park is close to the city in the lower reaches of the Kaimai's, off State Highway 29.  This 48 hectare site features Lake McLaren, formed behind a dam built for hydro-electricity generation.  The lake is home to ducks and swans and visitors can relax in the shade of established trees for a picnic or fish the lake for trout.

The landscape includes parkland, native bush and a fine botanical collection of trees and a range of birdlife. A short walk takes you to McLaren Falls and an animal park adjoins the park.

Fishing Charters

Visitors to Tauranga can choose from a range of Fishing Charters, including Mission Charters who specialise in anything from snapper fishing to the thrill of tuna and marlin, and Blue Ocean Charters who specialise in day or overnight reef or harpuka fishing on their large and comfortable fishing vessels.

Bay of Plenty Game fishing Charters also offer cruises, fishing and diving from their luxurious charter launches, and Kiwi Connection Charters offer a selection of top Charter Vessels for game or reef fishing, diving, eco tours and walks.

Flights

Tauranga Aero Club provides flight training, scenic flights and air charters. They offer a $60 hands on trial flight- a great way to satisfy that feeling of what it is like to fly an aircraft.

Take a scenic flight of your choice. View the rapidly growing western Bay of Plenty area and its beautiful beaches; White Island, New Zealand's only active volcano; the majestic Coromandel Peninsular with its delightful coastal resort settlements; or Rotorua's bush clad lakes and thermal areas.

If you need to travel anywhere in New Zealand try Tauranga Aero Club's air charter service. They can fly you to most small towns that have an airfield.
