Bay of Plenty Local Tourist Attractions

The Bay of Plenty has a fantastic array of tourist attractions. These range from high speed, high thrill adventures for the adrenaline junkies to a enlightening experience for those who seek a more slower pace. To give an overview of what the Bay has to offer we have listed a few of the local tourist attractions below:

Mount Maunganui Beach

Mount Maunganui is one of the most popular Bay of Plenty beaches. The small town’s population increases dramatically over the Christmas and New Year break, with visitors flocking to beach side festivals, concerts, and sporting events such as surfing, volleyball and triathlon competitions. For visitors wanting to relax, this sweeping beach, with its small bays, also provides plenty of space for sunbathing, swimming or snorkeling.

Stay & Play in The Bay

Some of New Zealand’s best activities are found here in Tauranga

White Island

Only an hours’ scenic drive along the coast from Mount Maunganui, tourists can take a day trip to White Island, New Zealand’s only live marine volcano that is fast becoming known for scuba-diving and snorkeling adventures.

Whakatane is a historical, coastal town that is the launching point for boat trips to White Island. Set in a farming and forestry region with Ohope beach nearby, this peaceful Bay of Plenty town is fast becoming a sought after destination for locals and visitors alike.

Further along the coast is Opotiki, gateway between the Bay of Plenty and Eastland, either by the inland route to Gisborne or a road that leads around the East Cape, both popular for touring.

Matakana Island

Matakana Extravaganza
Matakana Island one of the most sort after locations in the Bay of Plenty. It is privately owned and unless you get permission you can go no further than the high tide mark.

Adventure Bay of Plenty has built an excellent rapport with the Matakana community and can provide exclusive trips onto the island.

The island is only a short distance from the mainland however access is only by water or air.

So what we offer is an exclusive location only half to one hours paddle away and you take part in an experience few will ever achieve.

Home of the endangered New Zealand Dotterel with a shoreline rich in wildlife, deserted golden sand beaches offering safe swimming and known for the fastest growing pine trees in the world Matakana is a place not to miss.

But wait there's more:

With a choice of several areas to launch our kayaks depending on the tide it is just a short leisurely paddle to Matakana. Rich in sea life the anticipation of what you may see is as much of a thrill as the journey.

On our arrival you will be greeted by your local Matakana guide and your adventure has only just begun.

This special tour offers a unique insight into the lives of the local community. You can choose from a Clydesdale drawn carriage ride, used not so long ago to transport children to school, or go on the islands horse trek adventure.

Don’t underestimate the privilege it is just to step onto the island, not to mention be hosted, shown locations very few ever see and get an inside look into life on the island. The community is very protective of this treasure and you are receiving a rare gift.

Waimarino is situated on the banks of the Wairoa River just 10 minutes from Tauranga city. This tranquil paradise is based around the sport of kayaking and over the past 30 years Waimarino has become Tauranga’s premier kayak/canoe location.

Kayak Tours:
A kayak tour to the glow-worm canyon is an unforgettable adventure that can be experienced by people of any ability. The Sydney Morning Herald called it “unique and magical”. This is not your average kayaking tour.

Glide over the calm waters with NZ’s only scenic lake and glow worm cave kayak tour. This Scenic Tour will let you experience the quiet lakes’ edge with abundant birdlife before parting the bush to enter the glow worm cave.

The Wairoa River kayak tour allows you to explore the upper reaches of the Wairoa River. No prior experience required for this picturesque flat water paddle to Waimarino. Enjoy the peaceful wildlife as you float past.

We also regularly run a wide variety of other canoe and kayak tours including:
